Alleviate is a mobile app designed to help individuals with autism improve their social interaction skills and reduce anxiety in times of stress. Our interaction feature allows both verbal and non-verbal users to engage in a game that helps develop vocabulary and communication skills. The relaxation feature offers a variety of meditative tracks and soothing music as well as a personalizable breathing simulator to help users relax.
With this tool, individuals on the autism spectrum can develop the skills they need to equip themselves for adulthood. Alleviate gives them the ability to overcome challenges they face in their daily lives.
FemStem’s purpose is to provide assistance to individuals with autism spectrum disorder by means of computer science, app development and other forms of technology. We were inspired to create Alleviate for the 2018 Technovation Challenge when realizing that individuals with special needs worldwide did not all receive the resources and support that were available in our community.
We worked with many students with autism as well as caretakers part of the special education program at our high school. Surprisingly, we received an overwhelmingly positive response. For example, a crying student with autism was able to calm down and enjoy herself after playing with Alleviate’s ‘Interaction’ feature and exploring the breathing simulator in its ‘Relaxation’ feature. Not only did Alleviate put a smile on her face, it also encouraged her to get involved in the excitement along with the rest of her classmates.
